Dordt Beats Football on Homecoming
HASTINGS, NE- For the third in a row, the Hastings College football team was bested by a strong Dordt team, falling to the Defenders 55-17 on Saturday on Homecoming Weekend.
Hastings (2-2, 0-2 GPAC) and Dordt struggled on their first drives, with the first seven drives of the game resulting in a punt or a fumble with only 10 total yards.
The Broncos finally broke the string of scoreless drive when their final drive of the first quarter saw Clark Livingston (SR/San Juan Capistrano, CA), Jordan Johnson (SR/Spring Valley, CA), and Tahj Willingham (SR/Denver, CO) 56 of the 66 yards on the drive. Alex Stogdill (SR/Lincoln, NE) was able to cap the drive off with a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter to put the Broncos ahead 3-0.
The Defenders answered back on the next drive, going 65 yards for the 12-yard passing touchdown to take a 7-3 lead.
The Broncos started their next drive on the 25-yard line, but the drive only went three plays, as Livingston had his pass to Tyler Miller (FR/Baytown, TX) intercepted. The Defenders answered a few plays later with an 8-yard rushing touchdown to extend their lead 14-3 with 11:03 left in the first half.
The Defenders remained on top for the rest of the first half, scoring 10 more points on a 27-yard field goal and a 2-yard rushing touchdown with :34 seconds left to take a 24-3 lead into halftime.
Hastings started the second half with the ball, but the drive ended abruptly with a 34-yard pick-six by the Defenders to give Dordt a 31-3 lead with 14:23 left in the third quarter.
On the second drive of the half for the Broncos, Hastings was able to answer Dordt when Livingston connected with Johnson for a 33-yard passing touchdown to get Hastings within 21 of the Defenders.
Trailing 38-10, Stogdill had his punt blocked and the Defenders got the ball in the red zone. A two-yard hand-off put the Defenders ahead 45-10.
Livingston was able to get another passing touchdown when he slung the ball to Willingham for a seven-yard touchdown, making it a 45-17 game with :16 left in the third quarter.
The Defenders' Levi Schoonhoven got his third touchdown of the game when he took four rushes for 48 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown rush to get ahead of the Broncos 52-17.
Dordt scored one more time with a 34-yard field goal to get ahead 55-17.
The Broncos were led by Johnson and Willingham who had 147 and 124 yards, respectively.
The Broncos will return to Lloyd Wilson Field when they take on the No. 2 Morningside Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
