Men's Volleyball Wins Home Opener in 3 Sets
(Hastings, NE) – In front of over 1,000 fans watching the first ever collegiate men’s volleyball match in Nebraska, the Hastings Broncos defeated Central Christian in three sets (25-10, 25-19, 25-17).
(Hastings, NE) – In front of over 1,000 fans watching the first ever collegiate men's volleyball match in Nebraska, the Hastings Broncos defeated Central Christian in three sets (25-10, 25-19, 25-17).
Hastings took an 8-2 lead early, getting three kills from junior Austin McLeroy in that stretch. They grew the lead to 16-7, then went up by 10 at 19-9 on a Tiger attacking error. Leading 20-10, Hastings won the final five points with senior Wyat Lambertson getting a kill and three blocks during the run to give them the 25-10 first set win.
Tied at nine in the second set, the Broncos won four of the next five points to take a 12-9 lead. With a two point lead, Hastings extended the lead to seven at 19-12 with four kills during the run, including two by freshman Taven Johnson. Central Christian got back to within four at 21-17, but Hastings closed it out at 25-19 on a kill by freshman Seth Hill.
The Broncos won the first three points of the third set on two kills from Lambertson and one from freshman Christian Lafferty. Lambertson got a kill two points later as part of a 6-1 run and McLeroy added three kills during that period as well. Hastings grew the lead to 13-4 on a kill by Lafferty, but the Tigers won the next four points to get within five. Leading 18-11, Hastings continued to hold a comfortable lead, eventually getting to set point at 24-16. The Tigers won the next point, but a kill by Lambertson ended the match at 25-17.
McLeroy finished with nine kills, along with eight from Lafferty and seven each from Lambertson and Hill. Junior Aleksa Pljevaljcic had a game-high 34 assists and added six kills. Freshman Lopaki Laban led the team with seven digs.
