Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College men's basketball team saw its comeback effort fall short in its 73-65 loss to Briar Cliff on Sunday afternoon.
In the first half, the Broncos saw the Chargers open a 19-4 lead before taking a 31-21 lead into halftime. Then to start the second half, BCU went on a quick 9-0 run to start the second half before the comeback effort began.
Reggie Thomas put the team on his back and willed them back into the game.
After a couple of layups from Anthony Thompson and Grady Corrigan, Thomas let one fly from downtown as Hastings now trailed 40-28 with 15:48 left to play. From here the lead hovered anywhere from 8-12 points over the next nine minutes. Trailing 58-49, Thomas connected with Quinn Johnson as he drained a three as Hastings was now back in the game at 58-52 with 5:55 to go.
After a few empty possessions for both teams, Thomas got to the rack to make it a four-point game with a layup. Moments later BCU got a layup from Tyrus Eischeid to make it 60-54 with 3:37 to go as the Chargers called a timeout.
Again, Thomas worked off a pick and got to the rim for the layup, but Eischeid countered with one of his own as HC still trailed by six with 2:15 to go. Thomas went right back to work drawing a foul as he made both free throws to make it 62-58 with 1:36 to go.
BCU came back with two free throws and then Thomas got to the rim again for the layup to make it 64-60 with 1:10 to go. After the Chargers made just one of two free throws, Thomas buried a three to make it 65-63 with :58 to go.
Again, Briar Cliff made just one of two opening the door for the Broncos as Johnson had a great look from the corner but his three missed the mark. BCU would make its free throws to put the game away as HC suffered is second straight loss.
Thomas led the way with a double-double scoring a career high 38 points while pulling down a career high 15 rebounds and dishing out five assists.
The Broncos finished the game shooting just 35.9 percent (23-for-64) while BCU shot 56.3 percent (27-for-48). The rebounding edge went to the Broncos 30-to-29.
Hastings is now 14-6 (9-3) on the year and will be back in action Friday Feb. 2 as Dakota Wesleyan comes to town with tipoff set for 3:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
