Wildcats End Broncos' Season with 1-0 Defeat
(Marshall, MO) – Riding a five-game win streak, the Hastings Broncos traveled to Marshall, MO to take on Louisiana Christian in the first round of the NAIA Tournament looking for a win to set up a matchup with #4-seed Missouri Valley. The Broncos fell 1-0 to the Wildcats on Thursday afternoon.
(Marshall, MO) – Riding a five-game win streak, the Hastings Broncos traveled to Marshall, MO to take on Louisiana Christian in the first round of the NAIA Tournament looking for a win to set up a matchup with #4-seed Missouri Valley. The Broncos fell 1-0 to the Wildcats on Thursday afternoon.
Playing on a cold and windy afternoon, featuring gusts up to 28 miles per hour, the first half scoring opportunities were limited. The Wildcats appeared to score in the 37th minute, but the ball was ruled out of bounds before the cross came for the header goal, keeping the match scoreless.
Hastings had an opportunity to score in the final minute of the first half with their first corner kick, eventually resulting in a shot attempt from senior Uzayr Lee. In the scoreless opening period, Louisiana Christian took five shots compared to the Broncos' two, but neither team recorded a shot on goal. Senior Ruben Bande had the other shot attempt for the Broncos earlier in the half.
The Wildcats got on the board in the 54th minute of the second half on a left-footed strike from the top of the box past the diving save attempt by senior goalkeeper Pablo Arce-Salinas to go up 1-0. Louisiana Christian almost made it 2-0 on multiple occasions in the minutes following, but the lead was kept at one.
In the 70th minute, Hastings had a corner kick, followed by a shot from junior Sebastian Palmer, but the shot sailed high. The Broncos had excellent chances late in the match, but a header from senior Lewis Albert was high and a free kick from sophomore Wade McWhorter in the minute was saved, as the Wildcats held on 1-0.
For the match Louisiana Christian outshot Hastings 15-6 and 5-1 on shots on goal. Senior Joe Vokins recorded the only other shot attempt, while Arce-Salinas had four saves in the loss.
Hastings ends their season with an 11-8-2 record and the GPAC Tournament title.
