Hastings, NE – The Hastings College baseball team struggled to get its bats going in the 12-0 loss in game one but bounced back to pick up the split with a 7-2 win in game two over Dakota Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon out on Duncan Field.
The Broncos managed just two hits in the game one loss as DWU pounded out 15 hits to get its 12 runs.
Game two was a much different story as Jared Delgado get things going in the bottom of the first with a one out triple off the wall in left. Tyler Kissler hit a bounding ball up the middle which allowed Delgado to score to take the early 1-0 lead.
In the second, Tristan Martinez picked up a one out single followed by a RBI triple off the bat of Gavin Hogencamp to go up 2-0. Hogencamp then scored on the Dylan Otto sac fly to put Hastings up 3-0.
That seemed to be enough run support for Markus Miller as he had his stuff working well as he kept DWU in check through the first five innings. In the sixth, the Tigers put on some pressure having runners on second and third with one out. Miller would get Caleb Meyers to strikeout and after an intentional walk to Seth Christiansen, Miller struckout Oscar Pravecek with a high fast ball to get out of the jam as Miller let out a loud cheer after the K.
Miller would end hits day after 7.0 innings as he tied his career high in strikeouts with 10 and then handed the ball over the Jaden Jurgensmier in the eighth.
Jurgensmier got into some trouble in the eighth as Meyers tripled to left to plate a run and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. Jurgensmier was able to coax pinch hitter Nathan Meyers to ground out to short to end the threat.
Then the Bronco bats created more problems for the Tigers as Delgado and Jace Valdez each walked to put runners on with just one out. Welsh stepped up and poked a RBI single to right to bring home Delgado to make it 4-2. On the walk to Hogencamp, the ball got away from the catcher which allowed Santo Chirco to score to make ti 5-2.
Then Eli Merritt put all doubts a side when he unloaded on the Logan Davis offering that nearly cleared the 408 mark in center but ended in a two RBI triple as HC now led 7-2.
That was more than enough as Jurgensmier would sit the Tigers down in order in the ninth to secure his first save of the season and the Bronco victory.
Kissler and Welsh each had two hits and a RBI in the win. Miller picked up win number two on the year while he only gave up four hits.
Hastings is now 11-25 (3-13) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Apr. 10 as Kasas Wesleyan comes to town for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 2:00 pm out on Duncan Field.
