Crete, NE – The Hastings College baseball team had a tall task in front of them taking on NAIA No. 8 Doane battling through some schedule changes would drop game one 2-1 before losing game two 6-0 on Thursday.
Cooper Gierhan was on the mound in game one and through the first three innings, he gave up just one hits as the game remained scoreless into the fourth.
Mason Masur began the inning with a walk and following a strikeout, Jared Delgado walked moving Masur into scoring position. Masur then advanced to third on a wild pitch and Jace Valdez would make the Tigers pay with a RBI single to left as Hastings had a 1-0 lead.
That lead would be short lived though as Doane would get back-to-back two out singles to take a 2-1 lead.
The Broncos would get runners into scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh with its best chance coming in the final frame but a pickoff at second and a fly out would end the threat as HC lost 2-1.
Gierhan threw 4.0 innings giving up two runs on four hits to go along with two strikeouts. Max Smith and Jaden Jurgensmier each pitched an inning giving up no runs and no hits. Valdez led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Hastings dropped game two 6-0 and was only able to pick up one hit in the loss.
The Bronocs are now 9-17 (1-5) on the year and will be back in action Sunday Mar.24 as Doane comes to town for a doubleheader set to begin at 11:00 am out on Duncan Field.
