Bats Come Alive as Baseball Downs Park-Gilbert
Surprise, AZ – The Hastings College baseball team picked up its first win down in Arizona by defeating Park-Gilbert 9-3 before having game two cancelled due to weather on Thursday afternoon.
Surprise, AZ – The Hastings College baseball team picked up its first win down in Arizona by defeating Park-Gilbert 9-3 before having game two cancelled due to weather on Thursday afternoon.
After falling behind 1-0, the Broncos would tie things up in the second inning as Tyler Welsh started things with a single followed by a walk to Eli Merritt. Two batters later Jace Valdez singled to left which brought home Welsh to make it 1-1.
Esteban Acevdo held the Pirate bats in check until the fourth inning when the Bronco bats went back to work.
The Broncos would do all the damage with two outs with Jared Delgado reaching base due to a walk followed by a walk to Mason Masur. Then Valdez roped a double that cleared the bases to give HC the 3-1 lead.
Following a pitching change, HC kept going as Alliskair Descartes singled and then Valdez and Descartes moved into scoring position due to a wild pitch. Santo Chirco would make that hurt with a 2 RBI single as Hastings now led 5-1.
The Broncos added to their lead in the fifth and again did the damage with two outs. Delgado singled and then scored on the Masur single. Valdez followed suit with a RBI triple to make it 7-1. Stone and Welsh would each pick up RBIs in the sixth as HC went on to win 9-3.
Valdez led the way by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Welsh, Descartes and Chirco each finished with two hits in the win.
Acevedo picked up his first win by throwing 5.0 innings giving up one run on four hits with a strikeout.
Hastings improves to 6-10 on the year and will be back in action Friday Mar. 8 and will take on SAGU American Indian College with first pitch set for 5:00 pm down in Phoenix, AZ.
