Peru, NE – The Hastings College softball team picked up a split with Peru St. on Wednesday dropping game one 4-1 before winning game two 7-1.
The Lady Bronco bats struggled to get much going against Lanie Dryer through the first six innings. Hastings did manage to load the bases in the first but couldn't push across a run.
The Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the first without a hit and held that lead into the sixth. That's when Morgan Wilke hit a bases clearing double to center to push the lead to 4-0 heading to the seventh.
Head Coach Troy Baker went to his bench and brought out Taylor Stuhr and she hit a one out solo home run to make it 4-1. Katyn Kappler also came off the bench and singled followed by a single from Isabel Tanabe to put runners on first and second with one out. But fly out and a pop out ended the threat as Hastings lost game one 4-1.
Elana Gerhard led the way in game one by going 2-for-3. She was on deck when the final out was recorded.
The Lady Broncos would get its bats going early in game two as Tanabe opened the game with a leadoff walk. Schelkopf then reached base on bunt single and then the bases were loaded when Macie Mays reached on an error. Gerhard picked up a two RBI single to left for the early 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Mays would score on a wild pitch and then HC made it 4-0 on a Sam Skinner ground out.
That was more than enough run support for Kyleigh Boever as she only saw Peru St. give her fits in the third and the seventh. Boever pitched a complete game 7.0 innings giving up just one run while scattering six hits with six strikeouts.
The Lady Broncos added to its lead in the second as Tanabe scored on a wild pitch and then Schelkopf scored on a sacrifice fly from Gerhard. Stuhr made it 7-1 with her second home run of the day in the fifth with a blast over the left field fence.
Tanabe went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Skinner went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Gerhard led the way with three RBIs.
Hastings is now 9-13 (3-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Apr. 1 hitting the road to take on Concordia in a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 pm in Seward, NE.
