Seward, NE – The Hastings College softball team picked up a critical sweep of Concordia with some late game heroics defeating the Bulldogs 4-2 in game one and then 8-2 in game two on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Broncos were facing off with one of the best pitchers in the conference in Megan Eurich and did struggle to get much going scoring just one run through the first six innings. That came in the fourth on a Lexie Mudloff fielder's choice that made it a 2-1 ball game.
That slim lead carried into the seventh where Hastings would find some life as Mudloff led the inning off with a single. Rayleigh Guyer moved her over with a sac bunt and then Sam Skinner singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Isabel Tanabe then lifted a fly ball to left which brought home Mudloff to tie the game 2-2. Sydney Schelkopf then roped a ball down the left field line which plated Skinner as Hastings took the lead 3-2. Macie Mays added an insurance run with a single up the middle to go up 4-2.
That was all the run support Kyleigh Boever needed as she worked around a two out walk and got Caitlyn McGarvie to fly out to end the game as Hastings took game one 4-2.
Boever earned her seventh win of the season going the distance at 7.0 innings giving up two runs on just three hits while striking out three. Mays led the way at the plate going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Game two had the Lady Broncos jump out to an early 2-0 lead as Elana Gerhard picked up a RBI single in the first followed by a Gerhard RBI sac fly to right in the third. The Bulldogs quickly erased the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third as things would stay that way until the fifth.
This is where HC took advantage of a few miscues from Concordia as Guyer reached first on a hit by pitch to start the inning. Two batters later she scored on the Schelkopf single and the Schelkopf advanced to third following an error by the short stop. Schelkopf then scored on the Mays groundout to make it 4-2.
With CUNE unable to get its bats going, the Lady Broncos added four more runs in the seventh to put the game away. Mays doubled to score Boever and the Lauren Schneider singled to plate pinch runner Nicole Halsey. Later, Katyn Kappler singled up the middle to bring home skinner and Halsey rounding out the scoring at 8-2.
Sophia Haverkamp did the rest shutting down Concordia in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep. Haverkamp went 7.0 innings giving up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Schelkopf, Mays, Schneider and Kappler each finished with two hits in the game two victory.
Hastings improves to 11-13 (5-1) on the year and will be back in action Thursday Apr. 6 as Morningside comes to town with first pitch set for 4:00 pm out at the Smith Softball Complex.
