Hastings, NE – The Hastings College softball team hosted Morningside on Thursday afternoon out at the Smith Softball Complex coming away with a split dropping game one 2-0 before winning game two 6-1.
The Lady Broncos struggled in game one picking up just two hits as both of them were from Sydney Schelkopf.
Kyleigh Boever did pitch pretty well throwing 7.0 innings giving up just two runs on six hits.
It was game two where the sticks especially at the top of the lineup that would get things going.
The Lady Broncos took advantage of an early miscue by the Mustang defense as Schelkopf reached on an error. She moved to third on an error by the left fielder. Lauren Schneider then singled to center to take the early 1-0 lead.
Sophia Haverkamp made quick work putting Morningside down in order through the first two innings and in the third, she got some help from her defense as Ellie Cropley popped out to second and then Katie Murphy tried to tag up from second but Lexie Mudloff threw her out at home to keep it a 1-0 game.
Hastings would then take advantage of another Mustang error as Schelkopf would begin the inning with a bunt single. Then with two outs, Elana Gerhard hit a ball that that second baseman couldn't field allowing Schelkopf to score from second for the 2-0 lead.
After Morningside picked up a run in the fourth, Macie Mays would launch a ball over the fence in the fifth to make it a 3-1 ball game with her second home run of the season. Haverkamp continued to keep the Mustang bats in check and it would be Schelkopf that would break the game open in the sixth with a bases clearing double to left to push the lead to 6-1.
Haverkamp would then get three straight pop ups to end the game as Hastings picked up the much needed split. Haverkamp went 7.0 innings giving up just the one run on six hits with two strikeouts.
Schelkopf led the way going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs score. Mudloff went 2-for-3 in the win.
Hastings is now 12-14 (6-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Apr. 8 as Mount Marty comes to town for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 pm out at the Smith Softball Complex.
