Broncos Rally Late to Defeat Northern Oklahoma College
(Hastings, NE) – On their senior night, the women’s wrestling team rallied late to take down Northern Oklahoma College, 27-21, on Saturday, thanks to late wins by junior Larissa Kaz and senior Tabitha Wood.
(Hastings, NE) – On their senior night, the women's wrestling team rallied late to take down Northern Oklahoma College, 27-21, on Saturday, thanks to late wins by junior Larissa Kaz and senior Tabitha Wood.
The match started at the 145 weight class in order to give Wood the last match of the day at 138. The Mavericks took the first match by pin to take the early 5-0 lead.
Freshman Brooke Schilke earned an 11-0 technical fall at 160, then senior Marissa Patterson defeated the Mavericks at 180 to give Hastings its first pin of the day. Junior Taylor Rickley won by forfeit at 207 to put Hastings up 14-5 with six matches left.
Without any Broncos at 103, Northern Oklahoma picked up the five free points, then the Mavericks won by fall at 110 to retake the lead at 15-14.
Freshman Ruby Guerrero gave Hastings the lead again with a 12-2 tech fall at 117, but the Mavericks responded with their fourth and final pin at 124 to go up 21-18.
Kaz won at 131 by a 10-0 tech fall over her Northern Oklahoma opponent to give Hastings a narrow 22-21 lead, then Wood sealed the match with a pin at the 1:43 mark to give the Broncos the 27-21 win on senior night.
Up next, the Broncos will compete at NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, IA on Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11. Matches will start on that Friday at 10am.
