Men's Basketball Improves to 5-0 with Win Over Sterling
Hillsboro, KS – The Hastings College men’s basketball team took on a much improved Sterling squad to finish up the Tabor Classic where the Broncos came away with the 84-74 victory on Saturday afternoon.

It was a tight battle into the second half as the Broncos and Warriors were notted up at 58 all with 10:00 to go. This is where Tyrique McMurrin would break the tie with a jumper and then he later made one of two at the line to give Hastings the 61-58 lead with 9:36 to go.
Sterling answered with a Will Thigpen jumper but Reggie Thomas countered with a jumper of his own as the lead held at three 63-60 with 8:26 to play. The lead then grew to five on a Phil Cisrow jumper but the Warriors again answered with a Lucas Briar jumper as HC led 65-62.
The teams continued to trade baskets until Derrian Reed connected on a bucket to make it 73-68 with 2:33 to go. After Thomas missed his shot on the next possession, the Warriors got to within three on a Cedric Rollerson jumper with 1:51 left to play in regulation.
The Broncos needed a big bucket and they would get one from McMurrin to give Hastings the lead back at 75-70 with 1:23 to play. The Bronco defense would get the stop it needed as Karson Gansebom pulled down the board and would get fouled sending him to the line. He made both free throws to give Hastings some breathing room but Thigpen came right back with an answer making it a five point game with just :47 to play.
Hastings got the ball into Thomas as he would get fouled and sent back to the line making both free throws to create a three possession game. The Warriors would get one more bucket from Rollerson but that would be in at Hastings made five of the next six free throws to finish this game off at 84-74.
Thomas led the way for Hastings with 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting including a perfect 7-for-7 from the line. He just missed a double-double with nine boards while dishing out seven assists. McMurrin had a great game off the bench with a career high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Zenger added 13 points while Gansebom finished with 12 points. Matovic and Cisrow each added eight points.
Hastings finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the floor but struggled behind the arc shooting 31.4 percent (5-for-16). Sterling managed to shoot 44.6 percent (29-for-65) and 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from downtown but turned the ball over 18 times compared to just 11 for Hastings.
The Broncos won the rebounding battle again 42-to-32.
Hastings improves to 5-0 on the year and will begin Great Plains Athletic Conference action Wednesday Nov. 16 hitting the road to take on Doane with tipoff set for 7:45 pm in Crete, NE.
