Crete, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team used a strong second half to pull of the 75-60 victory over Doane on Wednesday night to open up Great Plains Athletic Conference action.
The game was tied 43-43 with 14:00 left to play in regulation but the Broncos came back with a nice run beginning with two free throws from Karson Gansebom. After the Broncos got a couple of defensive stops, Gansebom attacked the lane getting a layup to go plus the foul to make it a five point game after the made free throw. Then with just under 12:00 to go, Gansebom buried a three to make it 51-43 before Doane finally ended the run with a three from Cooper Peterson.
Gansebom wasn't done yet as again he attacked the rim and picked up the old fashioned three point play to make it 56-48. The Tigers countered with a Brady Timm bucket but Gansebom had yet another answer with a layup followed by a defensive stop and a three from Reggie Thomas to go up 59-48 with 7:40 to go. The Tigers were only able to get to within 10 one more time before falling 75-50.
Gansebom led the way for the Broncos with a game high 25 points on 8-for-15 shooting including going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe while also pulling down nine boards. Thomas added 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Phil Cisrow added a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards where Tyrique McMurrin also finished in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
Hastings shot 50 percent (25-for-50) from the field and 80 percent (20-for-25) from the line. The Broncos held the Tigers to just 40.7 percent (24-for-59) while the Tigers shot just nine free throws on the night.
Once again, the Broncos won the rebounding battle 35-to-27. Both teams controlled the ball well as HC committed 11 turnovers while Doane committed just eight.
Hastings improves to 6-0 (1-0) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Nov. 19 as Mount Marty comes to town with tipoff set for 4:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena. The Broncos are 6-0 for the first time since starting the 2007 season 15-0.
