Sioux Center, IA – The Hastings College men's basketball team ran into an absolute Buzzsaw as Dordt shot absolute lights out in its 97-64 victory over the Broncos on Friday night.
It seemed that if the Defenders put a shot up, it was going to go in and it started from the opening tip. The Defenders opened up a quick 6-0 lead on Hastings which forced a Todd Raridon timeout but Hastings didn't seem to be too stunned even though the Defenders hit a three coming out of the timeout.
Grady Corrigan was able to get the Broncos on the board with a three from the wing and after Dordt countered with a three from Cade Bleeker, Reggie Thomas got on the board with a bucket. Following a defensive stop, Corrigan hit a nice jumper to make it 12-7. Then Danilo Matovic scored from the low block and after Dordt got a bucket from Jacob Vis, Evan Kingston buried a three of his own to make it 14-12.
After Phil Cisrow fought for an offensive rebound, Corrigan would then make it count by hitting another three to give the Broncos the 15-14 lead. After another defensive stop, Thomas would connect on his first three of the night to give Hastings an 18-14 lead with 11:35 to go in the first half. It was then at this time where Dordt caught fire going on a 14-2 run to open an eight point lead at 28-0 with 6:51 to go in the first half.
The Broncos would get to within three but when the half ended, the Defenders had a 50-34 lead. The hot shooting would continue into the second half as the lead grew to more than 30 point before the Broncos fell 97-64. Dordt was shooting nearly 70 percent from the floor with 8:39 left to play before finishing the game shooting a blistering 64.4 percent (38-for-59) while Hastings shot just 36.5 percent (23-for-63).
Thomas led the way with 20 points on 6-for-10 shooing including 3-for-4 from behind the arc while also leading the team with five rebounds. Tyrique McMurrin added 15 points off the bench by hitting 6-for-12 from the field. Corrigan added 11 points with Kingston finished with eight points and Matovic finished with six.
The Rebounding edge went to the Defenders 32-to-29 and points in the paint was a huge difference in this game as Dordt out scored the Broncos by 20 in the paint.
Hastings is now 12-4 (5-3) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 7 hitting the road to take on Northwestern with tipoff set for 2:45 pm in Orange City, IA.
