Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College men's basketball team put up a good fight but it wasn't enough as Morningside picked up the 79-65 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Every time it felt like the Mustangs were going to pull away, the Broncos seemed to have an answer to keep the game close.
Late in the first half when Dylan Johnson made a three to put Morningside up 32-26, Evan Kingston answered with a three of his own. MU came right back with a layup from Jack Dotzler but Grady Corrigan got free for a layup to make it 34-31 with 3:28 to go in the half.
Morningside pushed the lead to 38-31 but back-to-back Tyrique McMurrin layups made it 38-35 at halftime.
The Mustangs quickly built a double digit lead at 50-35 but the Broncos would battle right back and after Reggie Thomas made a three to make it 55-45, he then hit two free throws followed by a McMurrin layup and Hastings was within six at 55-49 with 12:23 to go. This would be as close as Hastings would get as the lead would grow to as much as 17 before the Broncos fell 79-65.
Thomas led the way with 22 points on 6-for-14 shooting. Phil Cisrow had a solid game scoring 15 points while hitting 7-of-12 shots. Corrigan added 10 points while McMurrin finished with nine off the bench.
Hastings finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (25-for-52) while the Mustangs shot 58.3 percent (28-for-48) and also went 7-for-15 from behind the arc while HC hit just 5-of-23 from downtown. The rebounding edge went to Hastings at 26-to-25.
Hastings falls to 13-13 (6-12) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Feb. 15 as Midland comes to town with tipoff set for 7:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
