Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team started off with a bang but went ice cold in the second half falling to Doane 80-70 on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Early on the Tigers and Broncos were in a solid back-and-forth game as Doane held a slim 29-27 lead when Reggie Thomas knocked down a midrange jumper to tie things at 29 with 3:38 to go in the half. Then Phil Cisrow got open on the wing burying a three to give Hastings the lead back at 32-29 with 3:10 to go in the half. The lead grew to six when Grady Corrigan drained a three of his own with 2:43 to go in the first half.
Danilo Matovic then got a tough bucket to fall in the lane while Alex Oberhauser countered with a jumper to make it 37-31 with 1:28 left. Corrigan would again be left wide open as he hit another three to make it 40-31 and the Broncos carried a seven point lead into halftime after the Tigers Caleb Hrabik hit a jumper right before the buzzer.
Then the Broncos went ice cold in the second half while Hrabik would have the game of his life. Hrabik came in averaging 2.4 points per game and finished this game with 32 points as I'm not sure this showed up in the scouting report. Doane opened the second half on a 19-4 run and would not look back.
Corrigan led the way with 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting while connecting on 5-for-11 from downtown. Cisrow finished with a double-double 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting while pulling down 11 boards. Matovic had a nice game scoring 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting while Thomas added 10 points. Tyrique McMurrin added eight points off the bench.
Hastings finished the game shooting 46.8 percent (29-for-62) but shot 56.7 percent in the first half compared to 37.5 percent in the second. Doane finished the game shooting 56.5 percent (26-for-46). A major difference in the game came at the charity stripe where Hastings was a perfect 4-for-4 but Doane hit 19-for-25 from the line. Rebounds were heavily in the favor of the Broncos at 35-to-24.
Hastings falls to 13-10 (6-9) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Feb. 4 hitting the road to take on Mount Marty with tipoff set for 3:45 pm in Yankton, SD.
