(Hastings, NE) - In a game that featured zero first half goals and five second half goals, the Hastings Broncos scored in the 89th to prevail in their conference opener over Morningside University, 3-2.
The Broncos were aggressive in the first half, taking 12 shots to the Mustangs' two. Seniors Dekota Schubert and Allison Seery each took three shots, but the game went to halftime still 0-0.
In the second half, Schubert scored the opening goal in the 55th minute. Morningside responded in the 64th minute with a goal to tie it up at 1-1.
In the 70th minute, junior Megan Lampe found Schubert for her second goal of the game, but Morningside responded about 30 seconds later with a goal to even it up at two.
With time running about and a tie seeming more and more likely, freshman Payton Tanner kicked it past the Mustang goalkeeper for the game-winning goal, assisted by Schubert, to seal the 3-2 win.
For the game, Hastings outshot the Mustangs 21-7 and 13-2 shots on goal. Schubert and Seery each finished the games with six shots and four shots on goal. Senior Dulce Lopez also had four shot attempts in the game.
Up next, Hastings will travel to Sioux City, IA to play the Briar Cliff Chargers at 1pm on Saturday, September 21.
