Women's Tennis Picks Up Win at Mesa CC
(Mesa, AZ and Glendale, AZ) – Heading down to Arizona for their spring break trip, Hastings defeated Mesa Community College, 5-4, then lost 6-1 to Arizona Christian on Saturday.
(Mesa, AZ and Glendale, AZ) – Heading down to Arizona for their spring break trip, Hastings defeated Mesa Community College, 5-4, then lost 6-1 to Arizona Christian on Saturday.
Playing at Mesa CC under junior college rules, Hastings won the first two doubles matches, as junior Josline Carter and Victoria Harris won 8-5 at #1 doubles and sophomores Cara Ansbach and Lexi Benson took #2 doubles, 8-3. The #3 doubles team of sophomore Kayleigh Cetak and senior Paige Willcoxon held a lead in the match, but Mesa CC was able to rally and win 9-7, to keep it a 2-1 match heading into singles.
Carter lost a close match at #1 singles at 7-6(3), 7-5, and Mesa CC was able to win at #2 and #3 singles as well. The Broncos got wins at their final three singles positions to earn the win. Ansbach won 6-0, 6-2 at #4 singles, Benson won 6-4, 6-3 at #5 singles, and junior Abby Harveson won 6-0, 6-2 at #6 singles.
Against Arizona Christian, Carter and Harris picked up a 6-4 win at #1 doubles over the sixth best team in the west region. The Firestorm won 6-0 and 6-1 in the other two doubles matches to grab a 1-0 lead after doubles.
Harveson got the lone win for the Broncos, winning her #6 singles match, 6-2, 6-1. Carter played a very competitive first set at #1 singles, falling 7-5, before losing the second set 6-1. Arizona Christian won the other four singles matches without losing more than three games in any of the sets to claim the 6-1 win.
Up next, Hastings will play two matches against Paradise Valley Community College on Monday, Mar. 2.
