Softball Loses Pair of Extra Inning Games at Dakota Wesleyan
(Mitchell, SD) – In their doubleheader at Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, Hastings took a 2-1 lead in the 10th inning of game one, but ultimately fell 3-2. In the second game, the Broncos tied the game at two in the fifth, but the Tigers walked it off in the eighth, 3-2.

In game one, the first run occurred in the third inning when Dakota Wesleyan hit a solo home run with one out to center field. Through the first six innings, the two teams combined to have three runners in scoring position.
Senior Lauren Lee doubled with one out in the seventh and went to third on a groundout. An infield single by senior Sam Skinner scored Lee and tied the game at one, sending the game to extra innings.
After a hitless eighth inning, Hastings stranded one runner in the ninth, while Dakota Wesleyan loaded the bases with one out, but senior Kiera Brack got out of the inning with a couple of flyouts.
With a ghost runner taking place in the tenth inning, Hastings put freshman Charleigh Mellish in as a pinch-runner at second and after moving over to third on a sac bunt, she scored on a two-out single by freshman Raygan Hoos to go up 2-1.
Dakota Wesleyan tied it on the first pitch of the bottom of the 10th on an RBI-single to score the ghost runner. Four batters later with the bases loaded and one out, the Tigers walked it off on a single to left, winning 3-2.
Lee was 3-3 in game one with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Skinner also had a multi-hit game, going 2-3 with an RBI. Brack pitched 9.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on 10 hits and striking out two.
In game two, the Tigers began with a couple of walks and one turned into a run on a passed ball later in the inning. Dakota Wesleyan added on in the second inning, going up 2-0 on a bunt play with a runner on third.
Hastings responded immediately in the top of the third, as senior Katyn Kappler doubled to open the inning and after going to third on a sac bunt, she scored on a sac fly hit by senior Lexie Mudloff, making it 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Kappler hit a one-out triple and came home on the next play, as sophomore Sofia Carroll got a base hit to right field to tie the game at two.
Hastings had a runner on third in the sixth and seventh inning with chances to take the lead, but Dakota Wesleyan got out of both situations without giving up runs. The Tigers broke through in the bottom of the eighth, turning a leadoff double into a run on an RBI single for the 3-2 walkoff win.
Kappler was 3-4 with a double and a triple in game two with two runs scored. Mudloff was 2-3 with a double and RBI, while senior Ana Medeiros was 2-4. Sophomore Dani Sitts pitched 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, striking out three.
Up next, Hastings will play a doubleheader at Doane on Tuesday, Mar. 24 at 2 and 4pm.
