Softball Comes Up Short in Briar Cliff Doubleheader
(Sioux City, IA) – Playing the Briar Cliff Chargers on Sunday, Hastings held a 4-3 lead in game one, but Briar Cliff scored six unanswered runs to take the 9-4 win. In game two, Briar Cliff built a nine-run lead and while the Broncos chipped away at the lead, the Chargers won 11-7.
(Sioux City, IA) – Playing the Briar Cliff Chargers on Sunday, Hastings held a 4-3 lead in game one, but Briar Cliff scored six unanswered runs to take the 9-4 win. In game two, Briar Cliff built a nine-run lead and while the Broncos chipped away at the lead, the Chargers won 11-7.
The Chargers scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first in game one, as four of the first five batters reached to give them a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, senior Sam Skinner reached on an error and freshman Jenna McClain walked. Both advanced a base on a passed ball and scored on a two-run RBI single by sophomore Graecy Graf, tying the game at two. Briar Cliff took a 3-2 lead in the next half inning on a solo home run.
Sophomore Sofia Carroll led off the third with a single to right and two batters later, senior Lauren Lee put Hastings up 4-3 with a two-run home run. Briar Cliff answered with two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, and one run in the sixth to get the 9-4 win.
McClain went 2-2 with a walk and an RBI in game one, while Carroll was 1-2 with two walks and a run scored.
In game two, senior Katyn Kappler led off with a walk and after advancing to second on a passed ball, she scored on an RBI-single by senior Lexie Mudloff. Lee walked and junior Kaylee Pinneo added to the lead with an infield single, scoring Mudloff to make it 2-0.
Doane came right back in the bottom of the first, scoring on a triple and a Bronco error and adding a second run on a two-out RBI-single to tie the game at two. In the second, a two-out rally by the Chargers scored a run to take a 3-2 lead.
In the third inning, Briar Cliff capitalized on a couple of Bronco errors and scored five runs on four hits, including a two-run home run for their second and third runs of the inning, leading to an 8-2 advantage. The Chargers added three runs in the fourth to go up 11-2.
Hastings got three runs back in the fifth, with Carroll doubling to center with one out and scoring on a Mudloff single. Lee got an infield hit and Pinneo's RBI-double drove in Mudloff. Skinner capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI-single, bringing home Lee to make it 11-5.
Pinneo singled with one out in the seventh and went to third on a double by senior Ana Medeiros. Skinner knocked in Pinneo on an RBI-single and Medeiros later scored on a wild pitch, making it 11-7, as the Chargers got two outs immediately after that to end the game.
For the game, Pinneo was 3-4 with two RBIs, a double, and a run scored. Carroll, Mudloff, and Skinner all had two hits, combining for four RBIs and three runs scored.
Up next, Hastings will play at Northwestern in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 and 3pm.
