Softball Comes Up Short to Warriors in Midland Bracket Final

(Fremont, NE) – In the third matchup GPAC Tournament between the #1-seed Midland Warriors and the #8-seed Hastings Broncos, the Broncos came up short in the 7-3 loss.
Midland took control of the game in the second inning, scoring six runs in the inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, then a hit-by-pitch brought in the first run. With one out, the Warriors hit a two-run RBI-double, followed by an RBI-single. They scored their last two runs of the inning on a two-out, two-run RBI-single to left field to take a 6-0 lead.
Hastings had a scoring opportunity in the next half inning, as freshman Jenna McClain reached on a throwing error and sophomore Graecy Graf, who was 2-2 with a walk and two runs scored, singled in the next at-bat. Midland got out of the inning with a fielder's choice and a flyout, keeping their 6-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Broncos got on the board with a couple of runs. With two outs, Graf walked and senior Katyn Kappler doubled her home. Sophomore Sofia Carroll batted a ball to short, who committed a throwing error, which turned into Kappler scoring, cutting the lead to 6-2.
Senior Bailey Schmit pitched 4.1 relief innings of four-hit softball after the six-run second inning, allowing only a run back in the fifth on a two-out RBI-double to make it 7-2.
In the top of the seventh, Graf singled with one out and went to second on a ground out. Carroll drove Graf in with a single to right, but Midland ended the game on a flyout in the next at-bat to win it, 7-3.
The Broncos end their year with a 19-24 overall record and 8-14 in conference, advancing to the a bracket final for the first time since 2017.
