(Hastings, NE) – The Hastings Broncos lost 12-0 in game one and 7-1 in game two against the (RV) Dordt University Defenders on Friday.
On the second pitch of the game, Dordt took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run. Hastings was 90 feet away from tying up the game in the next half inning. Senior Lexie Mudloff doubled with two outs and advanced to third on a passed ball, but a pop out ended the inning.
Dordt scored seven runs on seven hits in the third inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead, hitting four singles, two doubles, and a grand slam in the inning. In the fourth, a single and home run put the Defenders up 10-0. Two more runs by Dordt in the fifth made it a 12-0 final.
In the second game, a walk by senior Katyn Kappler was the only offense in the first three innings between the two teams. Dordt got things going in the fourth on a leadoff walk and a two-run home run, as Hastings fell behind 2-0.
Senior Lauren Lee gave Hastings its first run of the day on a home run that was just out of the reach of the Dordt outfielders. They came close to adding on in the inning, getting runners on first and third with back-to-back singles, but Dordt kept it at 3-1 on a flyout to end the inning.
With one out in the fifth, freshman Raygan Hoos singled and Kappler doubled to put both runners in scoring position to give them a great scoring opportunity with the heart of the lineup coming up, but Dordt got out of the inning with a couple of flyouts.
Dordt broke the game open in the seventh, as a leadoff walk scored on an RBI-double. After an intentional walk and a second out, the Defenders scored two runs on a base hit. They capped the inning with a two-run home run to center to take a 7-1 lead.
Sophomore Dani Sitts pitched 6.1 innings in game two, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, striking out five.
Up next, Hastings will host Waldorf tomorrow afternoon at 1 and 3pm.
