Broncos Rout Threshers 72-55 in Season Opener

In the first quarter, junior Mariyah Avila got the first points on the board for the Broncos following a Bethel basket. A couple of free throws by sophomore Rachel Goodon gave Hastings the lead, which they held for the remainder of the opening period. At 4-3, Hastings scored six straight, capped off by an Avila three pointer to make it 10-3.
The Broncos led by as much as nine in the first quarter, but a buzzer beating corner three from Bethel cut the lead to 19-13 at the end of the period.
Hastings was dominant in the second quarter, outscoring the Threshers 20-9. Junior Macy Bryant scored the first five points of the period, including a three off a pass from freshman Josilyn Miller. Leading 29-17 with under four minutes left, the Broncos closed the half on a 10-5 run.
In the first half, Hastings shot 41 percent and held Bethel to 29 percent, while forcing 17 Thresher turnovers and outrebounding them by 10. Avila and Bryant each had 7 points, while Miller and senior Kiernan Paulk had 6 points to give Hastings a 39-22 halftime lead.
Bethel was able to trim the lead to 10 on multiple occasions in the third quarter, but the Broncos had an answer each time to hold their double digit lead. Hastings held a 54-44 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Avila scored the opening basket in the fourth, then after two Miller free throws and two baskets by Bethel, sophomore Tathis Arredondo hit a three to push the lead to 13 with 7 minutes left. Hastings added to their lead with a two from Paulk and that would put the game out of reach, as they took the contest 72-55.
Hastings balanced scoring was led by Avila with 11 points, who also contributed four rebounds. Freshman Ann Bose with 10 points and six rebounds off the bench, and Macy Bryant with nine points and six rebounds. Goodon had a fantastic day on the boards with 15, including eight offensive, to go along with her eight points.
Up next, the Broncos will travel to Bellevue to play the Bruins at 6pm on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
