(Hastings, NE) – Fresh off a road win that landed them a spot in the top 25, the #25 Hastings Broncos crushed (RV) Doane, 96-69, on Wednesday. Hastings took control early, building a 20-point halftime lead en route to the blowout, which included 48 points off of 32 Tiger turnovers.
Doane led for about 20 seconds in the first quarter after scoring on their opening possession. After that, it was all Broncos with their stifling full-court press. Junior Macy Bryant nailed a three-pointer and freshman McKenna Yates scored twice to go up 7-2 less than two minutes in.
Doane tied it up at seven, then with Hastings leading 12-9, freshman Jentri Marx scored inside and following a steal by senior Alyssa Baker, Yates drilled a triple to go up 17-9 with 3:02 left. The opening quarter ended with the Broncos leading 21-14, led by seven from Yates.
Sophomore Tathis Arredondo scored the first three points of the second quarter, then freshman Ann Bose went on a 5-0 run as Hastings scored the first eight points of the quarter to go up 29-14. Doane managed to cut the lead to 11, but Hastings responded with a 11-0 run, forcing six steals during that four-minute stretch. Junior Mariyah Avila was the main catalyst of the run, recording a pair of steals and assists, as well as a basket.
Leading 42-20 after the run, Doane was able to keep the game from getting out of reach, as Hastings led 48-28 at halftime. Yates and Bryant each had seven, while Avila contributed with four steals and sophomore Rachel Goodon had seven rebounds. Hastings had nine steals in the opening half, forcing 16 turnovers.
Similar to the end of the first half, the second half began with a turnover by the Tigers, with Yates eventually opening up the scoring with a three. Yates grew the lead to 25 with 6:52 left, but Doane started to chip away from the lead from there. They got as close as 14 in the quarter at the 2:25 mark, but the pressure defense and scoring from Yates and senior Kiernan Paulk helped keep the Bronco lead at 16 going into the fourth.
Doane scored to open the fourth and seemed poised to make a comeback after forcing a Bronco miss, however Bose got a steal and turned it into a layup, then Arredondo stole the inbound pass and made one of two to go up 73-56. Leading by 14 with 5:49 left, Paulk knocked down two free throws and following an Arredondo steal, Avila drilled a three off of an offensive rebound and kick out by Goodon to go up 19.
Yates went on a personal 5-0 run, capped off by a three-point play. After the Tigers missed a three on their next play down, Yates grabbed the rebound and found Goodon in transition, as she put in the layup and the free throw following the foul to go up 90-63 with 3:33 left. Hastings stayed aggressive the rest of the way and finished the blowout, 96-69.
Hastings had 22 steals in forcing the 32 turnovers - six by Avila, four by Arredondo, three by Goodon, two by Yates, Baker, Bose and Paulk, and one by senior Savana Kascak. The Broncos shot 51 percent from the field and held Doane to 36 percent.
Yates led the team in scoring with 22 points, along with three rebounds, while Bryant had 11 points. Marx came off the bench to score 10 points and grab five rebounds. Goodon just missed out on a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds to go along with three assists. Arredondo led the team in assists with eight, in addition to her eight points, and Avila contributed with six points and six assists to go along with her game-high six steals.
