Career Nights from Yates, Bose, and Goodon Carry Broncos Past Bobcats, 112-84
(Hastings, NE) – Playing their first game in almost two weeks, the #4-seed Hastings Broncos showed very little rust in their dominant 112-84 win over #13-seed College of the Ozarks, scoring 37 points in the first quarter alone en route to their blowout win. In the win, freshmen McKenna Yates and Ann Bose each established career-highs in scoring, while sophomore Rachel Goodon set a career-high in blocks.
(Hastings, NE) – Playing their first game in almost two weeks, the #4-seed Hastings Broncos showed very little rust in their dominant 112-84 win over #13-seed College of the Ozarks, scoring 37 points in the first quarter alone en route to their blowout win. In the win, freshmen McKenna Yates and Ann Bose each established career-highs in scoring, while sophomore Rachel Goodon set a career-high in blocks.
College of the Ozarks held a 5-2 lead early, but a 9-2 run that was keyed by five points from junior Mariyah Avila put Hastings up 11-7 three minutes in. Leading 11-10, Bose made three triples in a run that saw Hastings go up 23-12 with 4:13 left.
The Bobcats cut the lead to six at 25-19 with two minutes left in the quarter, but that's when Hastings made their game-changing run. Junior Macy Bryant drilled a three and Avila scored with a minute left to go up 11 on an and-one, then after a missed Bronco free throw, Yates scored. Hastings got a stop and Goodon made two free throws, then a steal by senior Kiernan Paulk in the backcourt led to a Yates three to put them up 37-19 after one.
Bose opened the second quarter with two baskets to push the lead to 22, but a 9-0 Bobcat run cut the lead to 13 with 7:41 left in the half. Yates drained a three to end the run and got a quick two off a backcourt steal.
Leading 51-38, Bose knocked down her fourth three of the half with 2:47 left and scored again to go up, 56-40. Hastings held a commanding 58-43 lead with under a minute left in the half, then Yates scored inside and her stolen pass off of the press turned into her third three of the half. Bose forced a steal late in the half and sophomore Tathis Arredondo fed Goodon for a buzzer-beating layup, putting Hastings up 65-43 at the half.
Hastings forced 17 first half turnovers and shot 58 percent from the field through 20 minutes. Yates led the way with 19 first half points, along with 18 from Bose.
Yates, Avila, and Goodon scored early to begin the second half as part of a 13-0 run to take a 78-43 lead with 7:36 left in the third. Paulk later got in on the scoring action with a three and a three-point play from Kissinger kept the lead at 33 at the 2:16 mark. Kissinger and Bose each added two more at the line as Hastings took a 92-61 lead going to the fourth.
Yates splashed in another three to begin the fourth, then after the Bobcats cut the lead to 25, Bose and Kissinger scored to go up 99-74 with six minutes left. Senior Whitney Bauer put Hastings over the century mark on a three-pointer with 3:45 remaining, as Hastings advanced to the second round of the NAIA Tournament with a 112-84 win.
Hastings shot 54 percent for the game and 47 percent from beyond the arc, while forcing 23 turnovers to score 41 points off of them. As usual, the Bronco bench came to play, outscoring the Bobcats 52-14 in that department.
Yates led the way with a career-high 25 points on five threes, seven rebounds, and two steals. Bose also had a career-high 24 points off the bench with four threes, along with three rebounds and a pair of steals. Goodon added 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high five blocks, while Avila had 13 points, three assists, and two steals.
Up next, Hastings will take on #12-seed Huntington, who defeated #5-seed LSU Shreveport, 64-56, in the second game of the night in Hastings. The game will take place tomorrow at 5pm in Lynn Farrell Arena for the chance to go to the NAIA National Tournament Final Site in Sioux City, IA.
