(Yankton, SD) – The women's basketball team showed their resilience by responding from their first loss of the season with a convincing 75-60 victory at Mount Marty. They got big contributions from a pair of freshmen, as McKenna Yates and Ann Bose combined for 44 points and 13 rebounds.
The first half was controlled by Yates, who had 14 points on just six shots in the opening half. With the Broncos trailing 11-6, she made two free throws, then about a minute later she hit a three. Another empty Mount Marty possession turned into a Yates basket on the other end to complete her personal 7-0 run to put Hastings ahead 13-11.
Mount Marty hit a three on their ensuing possession to lead 14-13, but Hastings closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run in the final 2:30. Bose, who had nine first half points off the bench, converted a three-point play, then hit a three on their next offensive set.
Yates scored on a layup to open the Broncos scoring in the second quarter. Bose hit another three, but the Lancers were able to fight back to take a 27-26 lead.
Yates hit a three to retake the lead, then after a Mount Marty layup, Yates drew a foul and knocked down her third and fourth free throws of the half. Junior Mariyah Avila's shot from downtown and senior Kiernan Paulk's layup gave the Broncos a 36-29 halftime advantage.
Points would be harder to come by for most of the third quarter, as Hastings scored just six points in the first seven minutes. Mount Marty cut the lead to 42-39, then after both teams knocked down a pair of free throws, Bose, who scored 14 of her 23 points in the second half, got a steal and forced a foul on the other end. She put in the free throws and scored a layup two possessions later.
Leading 48-41, the Lancers made two free throws with 17 seconds left in the third quarter. Avila concluded the quarter with a three off a pass from Paulk to expand the lead to 51-43. Avila kept that same stroke through the quarter break, hitting a three on the opening play of the fourth quarter to effectively make it a six-point possession.
Shortly after a Lancer bucket, Bose continued her great offensive day with two more free throws, then after a defensive stand, Avila found Bose behind the three-point line, where she knocked it down to extend their lead to 14 just over a minute into the final quarter.
Mount Marty was able to trade baskets to keep the margin reasonable, but baskets from Yates, Bose and sophomore Rachel Goodon enabled the Broncos to have a healthy lead the rest of the way.
With Hastings leading 68-48 and the Lancers looking for one last run with two minutes left, Paulk rebounded a Goodon miss and forced a Lancer foul. After knocking down the free throws, Goodon got a steal and found Bose for her fourth three of the game to push the lead back to 15. Yates later drilled a couple of free throws to conclude the Hastings scoring in the 75-60 win.
The Broncos were led in scoring by Bose, who had 23 points and seven rebounds off the bench in 25 minutes. Yates finished with 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Avila also contributed 13 points and six rebounds, while Goodon stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. Hastings outrebounded the Lancers by five and forced 16 turnovers, turning those into 15 points.
Hastings will return to the court tomorrow for an exhibition matchup at Augustana University, which will start at 2pm. From there, they will host Bethany College after Thanksgiving break on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2pm.
