(McPherson, KS) – The McPherson Bulldogs used a six-run fourth inning to take down the Broncos on Wednesday afternoon, 13-3.
Hastings loaded the bases in its first three plate appearances of the game on two singles and a hit-by-pitch, then with one out, sophomore Peighton Vargas drove in sophomore Tyler Rojas on a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead.
After the Broncos took the early lead, McPherson responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first and tacked on two more in the second to go up 4-1.
With one out in the third inning, junior Evan Morrison singled and stole second, then scored on an RBI-double down the right field line by junior Dylan Wimbs to cut the deficit to two. The Bulldogs went up 5-2 on an RBI-double with two outs in the third.
Senior Tristan Martinez reached base to start the fourth after getting hit by a pitch and went to third on a base hit by senior Jace Valdez. With Valdez attempting to steal second base, Martinez stole home to get a run back, but McPherson erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 12-3 lead.
McPherson closed the game out with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to win it, 13-3.
Wimbs went 2-3 with an RBI and Rojas was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored. Morrison was 1-2 with a run scored. Hastings got two scoreless frames by freshman Trevor Huston in the sixth and seventh innings, recording two strikeouts to only one hit.
Up next, Hastings will play a four-game series against Mission University. They will start the series with a double-header on Sunday, Feb. 15 in Joplin, MO at 1pm, then will play the following day in a double-header starting at 11am in Neosho, MO.
