Baseball Scores 21 Runs in Game 1 Win; Fall in Game 2
(Sioux Center, IA) – The Hastings baseball team won a high-scoring, back-and-fourth game one, 21-12, then lost 13-3 in game two.
(Sioux Center, IA) – The Hastings baseball team won a high-scoring, back-and-fourth game one, 21-12, then lost 13-3 in game two.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the first in game one, Dordt scored their first run on an error, then after an RBI-double, they capped their scoring in the inning with a sac fly to take an early 3-0 lead.
Hastings answered back with four runs in the top half of the second inning, loading the bases with the first three batters on a single and a pair of walks. Junior Levi Fletcher singled to drive in senior Tristan Martinez and junior Joshren Mace Magnaye. Senior Chris Faherty continued the rally with a single to center, scoring senior Spencer Searcey. Two batters later with the bases loaded again, junior Jared Delgado hit into a double play, but Fletcher scored on the play to take a 4-3 lead.
In the third inning with one out, Dordt was hit by a pitch and followed that with back-to-back home runs to go up 6-4. Faherty walked and stole second to start the fourth and senior Jace Valdez brought him home on a base hit to left. With two on and two out, Martinez and Mace Magnaye each drove in a run to put Hastings up 7-6. Dordt tied the game at seven in the bottom of the fourth.
With the bases loaded in the fifth, Martinez singled to drive in senior Ben Richter and Delgado, but Dordt tied the game again in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out single. In the sixth with two on and one out, Valdez hit an RBI-double, followed by a Delgado RBI-single and an RBI-double by sophomore Peighton Vargas. Hastings loaded the bases again in the inning and Martinez and Mace Magnaye each drove in a run. The Defenders answered with three runs in the sixth, making it a 15-12 Hastings lead.
Hastings loaded the bases in the seventh on two hit-batters and a walk, then Vargas drilled a grand slam over the center field wall to go up seven. Hastings loaded the bases again and junior Dylan Wimbs scored on a wild pitch and Martinez scored on an RBI-groundout by freshman Diego Martinez, as the Broncos won 21-12.
T. Martinez went 5-6 in game one with four RBIs and two runs scored. Vargas was 3-6 with five RBIs, a grand slam, and a double. Mace Magnaye also had three hits, walking twice and driving in three runs, along with scoring once. Faherty, Valdez, and Searcey had three hits each, combining for seven runs, five walks, and three RBIs.
Junior pitcher Evan Chavez got the win, going 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out two. Junior Ryder Derouin pitched the final 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three.
In game two, the Defenders scored six runs on five hits and an error in the first inning, scoring on a double, three singles, and a wild pitch to take an early 6-0 lead. Hastings made it 6-2 in the second, getting two on with two out, and Delgado hitting a two-run RBI-double.
From there, Dordt took control, as they hit a three-run RBI-double in the fourth, then added another run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to go up 13-2. Junior Nick Deterding hit a solo homer in the seventh, making it a 13-3 final.
Up next, Hastings will host Concordia in a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 25 in their regular season finale, beginning at 1pm.
