Baseball Picks Up Series Split With Mount Marty

The Broncos got a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when a two-out double from junior Samuele Bruno turned into a run two pitches later, as sophomore Peighton Vargas drove him home.
Mount Marty took a brief 2-1 lead in the second inning, then the Broncos struck back with three runs in the third. Sophomore Tyler Rojas singled and junior Evan Morrison smashed a two-run home run to deep right-center field. Later in the inning with Bruno on second, senior Tristan Martinez singled to put Hastings up 4-2.
In the fourth inning, two of the first three Lancers walked, leading to two runs being scored on a one-out triple. They tacked on another run in the inning on a sac fly to go up 5-4.
Morrison drove in senior Ben Richter and sophomore Cody Haynes with two outs and the bases loaded on a first pitch single, going back up one at 6-5. In the fifth inning, Hastings loaded the bases again, scoring a run on a hit-by-pitch to senior Jace Valdez to take a 7-5 lead. Mount Marty retook the lead at 8-7 on a two-out, three-run RBI-double.
Hastings took advantage of three Lancer errors in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead for good. Morrison and Bruno walked to start the inning, then on a failed pickoff attempt, the ball went past the centerfielder's glove, allowing Morrison to score and Bruno to advance to second.
Following that play, Delgado reached on a second errant throw by the pitcher and Martinez drove in Bruno on a bunt single. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hastings scored a run on an RBI-groundout from junior Joshren Mace Magnaye and two more on a two-run RBI-double to left by Valdez, making it 12-8. Junior pitcher Ryder Derouin struck out all three batters in the seventh to end the game.
Hastings out-hit the Lancers, 12-4, in game one, and Mount Marty also committed four errors. Junior Eduardo Galicia got the win, throwing .2 innings, allowing one run on one hit. Martinez went 3-4 at the plate and drove in two, while Morrison, Bruno, and Vargas each had two hits and combined for five RBIs.
In game two, Mount Marty struck first, scoring a run in both the first and second innings to go up 2-0.
Hastings was held scoreless on one hit through five innings, but tied the game in the sixth. Valdez walked, Rojas was hit by a pitch, and Morrison walked to load the bases. Bruno walked and Vargas was hit by a pitch to tie the game with zero outs, but the Lancers got three straight outs to get out of the inning without any more runs.
Mount Marty scored five runs in eighth, coming on five hits and an error. The Broncos got three runs back in the bottom of the eighth, as Bruno led off with a triple and after a walk to Vargas, junior Dylan Wimbs brought him home on a sac fly. With two outs, junior Carter Guiton made it 7-5 with a pinch-hit two-run RBI-single.
In the ninth, Rojas singled to open the inning, then with two outs, juniors Jared Delgado and Nick Deterding walked to load the bases. Mount Marty got a flyout to end the game, winning 7-5, to secure the series split.
Up next, Hastings will play a double-header at Midland on Monday, Apr. 6 at 1 and 3:30pm.
