(Hastings, NE) – Facing Doane on day two of the four-game series on Sunday, the Broncos forced extra innings in game one before losing 10-2, then fell 4-3 in a tight game two contest.
In game one, Hastings scored first, as sophomore Tyler Rojas led off the first with a single off the pitcher's glove and after stealing second, he scored on a base hit by sophomore Peighton Vargas to go up 1-0.
Doane took a 2-1 lead in the second, getting three hits in the inning. A leadoff walk was followed by three one-out singles, with the final hit driving in both runs. Those would be the only runs that freshman pitcher Cameron Dahlgren would allow, as he gave up only six hits through the first six innings and struck out five.
The Broncos had a chance to tie the game in the sixth, as junior Jared Delgado and junior Joshren Mace Magnaye got on with a walk and single with two outs. Junior Dylan Wimbs hit a chopper to third and beat out the throw. Delgado rounded third aggressively on the play, attempting to score, but was thrown out at home on a throw by the Doane first baseman, keeping the score at 2-1.
Dahlgren ended his day throwing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five. Junior pitcher Carmen Severino got the final out in the top of the seventh on a flyout with runners on first and second.
In the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, Rojas singled to left. Morrison drilled the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a triple and Rojas flew around the bases and beat out the throw home, tying the game at two. After Vargas was intentionally walked, senior Chris Faherty bunted, but junior pinch-runner Nick Deterding was thrown out at home and the Tigers got out of the inning on a foul out to third to send the game to extra innings.
The first three Doane batters walked in the eighth to load the bases and two of them scored on a two-run RBI-single to right. They scored six more runs in the inning to take a 10-2 lead to secure the win.
Morrison went 2-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI in game one, while Rojas was 2-5 and scored two runs.
In game two, Doane led off the game with a double and a home run to deep left field to go up 2-0 early. Hastings got a run back in the bottom of the first, as a leadoff walk by Rojas turned into a run driven in by Mace Magnaye, cutting into the lead at 2-1.
Junior Samuele Bruno tripled to right center in the third and Mace Magnaye drove him in on an RBI-groundout to short, tying the game at two. Doane scored two runs in the fifth, capitalizing on a couple of errors to retake the lead at 4-2.
In the fifth, Vargas walked to start a two-out rally. Bruno doubled in the next at-bat, then on a chopper back to the pitcher by Mace Magnaye, the Tigers could not field it properly, allowing Vargas to score and make it 4-3. Hastings was held to no runs and had only one baserunner in the final two innings, as Doane held on for the win.
Senior Markus Miller pitched all seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits, striking out five batters. Bruno led the team in hits in game two, going 2-4 with a double, a triple, and a run scored. Mace Magnaye was 1-3 and drove in all three runs.
Up next, Hastings will play at Dordt on Thursday, Apr. 23 at 1 and 4pm.
