In an outdoor match against Maryville after clearing the courts of the morning rain, the Broncos lost 6-0 at #1 doubles and 6-3 at #2 doubles to fall behind 1-0, as the teams just played to clinch.
The Scots won at #2, #3, and #4 singles by dropping just two games in each match. Freshman Aden Ingwerson had the most competitive match, trailing 5-4 at the time of the clinching point, as Maryville won 4-0.
Playing against Wittenberg at the Goodfriend Tennis Center - the indoor tennis facility for the University of Tennessee - sophomores Joel Carter and Ben Hafer won the #3 doubles match by forfeit. The #the Eagles won 6-3 at #1 singles, and while freshmen Gavin Watterson and Caden Carter came back from a 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead, the match went to a tiebreak and the Broncos fell 7-5 to lose the doubles point.
In singles, Hasting started with forfeit wins by J. Carter and Hafer at #5 and #6 singles. Watterson put the Broncos up 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at #4 singles. Wittenberg won 6-3, 7-5 at #2 singles to cut it to 3-2.
Sophomore Alex Hafer won the first set at #1 singles, 6-4, then after a 6-4 second set loss, he fell 10-6 in the third set super-tiebreak. At #3 singles, C. Carter took the first set, 6-4. The Eagles forced a second set tiebreak and took it 7-3. In the third set super-tiebreak, Wittenberg clinched the match with a 10-7 win, making the match score 4-3.
Up next, Hastings will play Baker in Crete, NE at 11am on Saturday, Mar. 21 in their final match before conference season starts.
