Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team won its second straight to start the season by defeating Ottawa 72-53 on Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The first quarter stayed tight until late in the quarter when the Lady Broncos were able turn the heat up beginning with a Kendell Sawinsky layup. Following a Dawson Knode steal, Carley Leners picked up a layup off the Sarah Treffer assist to go up 13-9 with 2:26 to play in the first.
Then Leners would connect from downtown to make it 16-9 before a Hailey Henry layup stopped the run. Treffer would then get a layup to go and after two free throws from the Braves, Sawinsky connected on a jumper at the buzzer as HC led 20-13 after one quarter.
Alyssa Baker started the second quarter with a three to push the lead to double digits but the Braves cut that deficit in half at 23-18 midway through the second quarter.
The Lady Broncos went right back to Leners for a jumper and then Treffer connected on a layup as the lead was back to nine at 27-18 with 4:33 to play in the first half. That nine point lead would hold the rest of the quarter until Katharine Hamburger drained a three with :26 to go and after Ottawa tried to score quickly, Allison Bauer buried a three as time expired as Hastings led 37-22.
The lead grew as large as 27 before Jina Douglas cleared the bench late eventually winning by 19 points.
Bauer led the way with a career high 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting including going 6-for-7 from behind the arc. Her previous career high was 22 points back during her freshman campaign against Presentation.
Mariyah Avila finished with 10 points while Leners added 11 points off the bench.
Even though size was not in Hastings' favor, the Lady Broncos did win the rebounding battle 43-to-41. Hastings shot just 39.1 (27-for-69) percent from the floor but shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from behind the arc. The Braves shot just 35.1 percent (20-for-57) and just 18.8 percent (3-for-18) from behind the arc. Hastings turned Ottawa over 20 times compared to just 13 turnovers for HC.
Hastings improves to 2-0 on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Nov. 9 hitting the road to take on Grand View with tipoff set for 6:00 pm in Des Moines, IA.
