Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team got off to a nice start but then Dakota Wesleyan used a big second quarter to pull away for the 77-58 victory on Friday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady Broncos jumped out to a fast start opening up a quick 8-2 lead highlighted by a layup from Mariyah Avila followed by back-to-back three from Allison Bauer and Katharine Hamburger. Hastings then grew the lead to eight as Dawson Knode connected on a long jumper followed by two free throws by Miriam Miller to go up 12-4 with 5:22 leff in the first quarter.
DWU would eventually get the deficit down to just three but Alyssa Baker connected from way downtown to give HC the 19-13 lead after one quarter of action.
But then the Lady Tigers came out on fire in the second quarter shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor in the period and eventually took a 38-29 lead into the break. After shooting nearly 55 percent in the first quarter, the Lady Broncos shot just 33 percent in the second and fell behind by nine points at the break. And nine points would be as close as HC would get the rest of the way.
Baker led the way with 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Avila finished with nine points while Carley Leners finished with eight off the bench by going 4-for-6 from the floor. Hamburger added seven points while Paulk finished with six.
For the game, Hastings shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) while DWU shot 48.6 percent (34-for-70). It was turnovers that were certainly costly for Hastings committing 20 of them that turned into 24 points while the 10 turnovers the Tigers committed turned into just eight for Hastings. Both teams finished with 34 rebounds for the game.
Hastings falls to 8-11 (4-9) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 21 as Jamestown comes to town with tipoff set for 1:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
