Fremont, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team struggled through three quarters but came alive in the fourth to pull away for the 61-48 win over Midland on Wednesday night inside Wikert Events Center.
Trailing 39-36 heading into the fourth, the Lady Broncos were looking for a spark and did they ever get one from Kiernan Paulk. Now trailing 41-39, Paulk drained a three to make it 42-41 and after Asia Bryant gave the lead right back to the Lady Warriors, Paulk calmly knocked down another three to give Hastings the 45-43 lead with 7:24 to play.
Midland came right back getting two free throws from Emma Shepard but Paulk answered with you guessed it, another three to put HC up 48-45. Then Midland turned the ball over and Miriam Miller made them pay with a tough layup as MU called a timeout as Hastings had seized all the momentum. After Shepard hit two more free throws to make it a three point game, the teams traded multiple empty possession until Olivia Kuglar buried a three of her own to make it 53-47 with 2:40 left to play.
Then it turned into Hastings just needing to make it free throws down the stretch doing just that going a perfect 8-for-8 to put the game away. HC went a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe while shooting 54.5 percent (6-for-11) and 80 percent (4-for-5) from downtown in the fourth. Hastings outscored the Lady Warriors 25-9 in the final frame.
Paulk finished the game with 13 points as 11 of them came in the fourth quarter. She shot 4-for-7 from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. She came into the night hitting 6-for-15 from behind the arc. Kugler also added 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Miller in her first game since joining the team after a successful volleyball season pitched in nine points off the bench. Allison Bauer also finished with nine points as all of those came from behind the arc. Mariyah Avila finished with seven points.
Heading into the fourth, Hastings was shooting just 30.2 percent (13-for-43) and just 33 percent (7-for-21) from behind the arc. They finished the game shooting 35.2 percent (19-for-54) and 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from deep. The Lady Broncos also shot 92.3 percent (12-for-13) from the line. Midland won the rebounding battle 40-to-33 but Hastings held the Warriors to 34 percent (18-for-53) and just 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from behind the arc.
Hastings improves to 6-4 (4-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Dec. 10 as Concordia comes to town with tipoff set for 2:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
