Miller Nets Career High as Women's Basketball Ends Skid
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women’s basketball team ended its eight game skid by defeating Doane 65-56 on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena. The win also keeps them mathematically alive to qualify for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament with just five games to play.

Trailing 7-6, Hastings would take its first lead of the game when Allison Bauer buried a three to make it 9-7 with 5:23 to go in the first quarter. The Lady Broncos would never trail again as Dawson Knode hit two free throws to extend the lead to four. Following a Libby Trausch layup, Mariyah Avila attacked the basket getting a layup to go to make it 13-9.
Then Miriam Miller would get a steal and go coast-to-coast for the layup forcing a Tiger timeout. Alyssa Baker answered the timeout with a layup of her own and after Doane made it 17-11 with a couple of free throws, Miller would hit a three from the corner to give HC the nine point edge after one quarter of action.
The Tigers fought back early in the second quarter getting to within two at 22-20 but Knode stopped that run with a layup. Then Bauer buried another three to go up 27-20 and then got layups from Miller and Bauer to extend the lead to double digits at 31-20 with 4:00 to go in the half. The lead grew to as much as 17 when Carley Leners drained a three from the wing and the Lady Broncos carried a 38-23 lead into halftime.
Doane would not go away and would eventually get things to tighten up after Trausch made a free throw to make it 59-56 with 1:18 left to go in the game. Miller would then attack the hoop and when the double team came, she dropped the ball off to Katharine Hamburger for the layup to make it 61-56 with :58 to go. The Tigers would then go cold from the field as HC would come away with the nine point victory.
Bauer led the way with 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting including 4-for-7 from behind the arc. Miller had her best game as Bronco scoring a career high 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Knode added 10 points while going 4-for-5 from the floor.
HC shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the floor while holding Doane to just 34 percent (17-for-50). The rebounding edge did favor the Tigers 38-to-36 but Hastings outscored DU 16-9 in points off turnovers. The Lady Broncos also got way more bench help outscoring Doane 31-2.
Hastings improves to 9-14 (5-12) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Feb. 4 hitting the road to take on Mount Marty with tipoff set for 2:00 pm in Yankton, SD.
