Offense Goes Cold as Women's Basketball Loses to Morningside

Hastings seemed to have the Mustangs back on their heels in the second quarter when they went on a 16-2 run and opened up a nine point lead.
The run began when Mariyah Avila hit a three to make it 18-16. After a free throw from Carley Leners, Morningside got a jumper from Sophia Peppers but Avila countered with another three to tie things at 20.
The next time down the floor Allison Bauer hit a three to give HC the lead at 23-20. A minute later Bauer hit another three and a minute after that she hit another three that caused Morningside to call a timeout with Hastings leading 29-20.
Morningside did claw its way back and trailed just 30-27 at the break.
After Avila hit a three to open the third quarter and then Kiernan Paulk got a bucket to put Hastings up 35-29, the Lady Broncos would not score another point until the Mustangs opened up a 44-35 lead. Hastings would end up getting gout scored 50-15 in the second half.
Bauer led the way with 12 points on 4-for-7 from behind the arc. Avila was the other to score in double figures with 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Miriam Miller added seven points off the bench.
HC shot just 27.9 percent (12-for-43) from the floor compared to 50.9 percent (27-for-53) for the Mustangs. Hastings was just 2-for-20 from the floor in the second half. Both teams finished with 31 rebounds but Hastings also committed 29 turnovers which turned into 35 points for Morningside.
Hastings falls to 9-17 (5-15) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Feb. 15 as Midland comes to town with tipoff set for 6:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
