Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team couldn't hold on to its 11 point second half lead and lost to College of Saint Mary 61-57 on Tuesday evening inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady Broncos had built its lead behind the hot hand of true freshman Mariyah Avila but CSM made some changes in the third quarter and kept her at bay as the Flames began to make their comeback.
CSM got the lead down to five towards the end of the third quarter but Carley Leners got a put back to go right before time expired to give HC the 45-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
After Kiernan Paulk connected on a jumper to give Hastings a 47-39 lead, CSM would then go on an 18-2 run to build a 57-49 lead before Allison Bauer connected on a three to make it 57-52 with 2:30 left to play. Then Dawson Knode got a steal that led to a missed Avila three but Bauer was there for the put back plus the foul to make it 57-55 with 2:13 left to play.
On the Flames next possession, Katharine Hamburger got the steal and found a wide open Bauer as she drained another three to put Hastings up 58-57 with 1:39 to go.
College of Saint Mary would miss its next shot but Clare Lewandowski got the offensive rebound and the put back to go back up 59-58.
Hastings would get a good look from Bauer at the top of the key but her shot missed and the Flames got a layup from Madelyn Turner to go up 61-58 with :12 left in regulation.
Hastings got the ball to Bauer as she missed a jumper but Knode pulled down the board and found Paulk wide open on the wing but her three missed the mark as the Flames escaped with the three point win.
