Tanner Scores in the 78th Minute to Secure 2nd Straight GPAC Tournament Title
(Hastings, NE) – In the battle for the GPAC Championship and automatic berth to to NAIA National Tournament, the #3 seed Hastings Broncos had to wait until the 78th minute, but sophomore Payton Tanner scored the goal to take down the #4-seed Dordt Defenders on Wednesday night, 1-0.
(Hastings, NE) – In the battle for the GPAC Championship and automatic berth to to NAIA National Tournament, the #3 seed Hastings Broncos had to wait until the 78th minute, but sophomore Payton Tanner scored the goal to take down the #4-seed Dordt Defenders on Wednesday night, 1-0.
Dordt took the first two shots of the game, both being deflected by the Hastings back line. Tanner almost scored the first goal, hitting off the crossbar in the 11th minute.
Hastings' lone shot on goal in the half was by sophomore Sophia Lee, but their best opportunity of the half came in the 39th minute when junior Payton Henshaw's header hit the crossbar, then off the rebound, her follow-up shot went over the goal, keeping the game tied at zero at the break.
The Broncos had eight shots in the half to Dordt's five, with Hastings' Lee having the only shot on goal. Henshaw led the team with three shot attempts in the opening half.
Junior Jasmin Bislev Nielsen had a couple of early shot attempts in the second half, including two on goal, but Dordt saved both opportunities. Lee fired another shot on goal in the 66th minute that the Dordt goalkeeper stretched out to save.
Off of a corner kick from senior Megan Lampe in the 78th minute, the ball bounced to senior Jesse Chartier, who threaded a pass to Tanner. Tanner's kick went just past the left hand of the diving Defender to give Hastings a 1-0 lead. Dordt took their final shot in the 89th minute, missing wide, as the Broncos held on for the 1-0 victory.
Hastings led the game in total shots, 14-8, and shots on goal, 5-0. Bislev Nielsen led the team with four shot attempts, along with three from Henshaw. Bislev Nielsen and Lee had two shots on goal in addition to Tanner's game-winning goal.
Up next, Hastings will await word from the NAIA on their potential seed in the national tournament. The selection show will take place on Friday, Nov. 14 at 6pm on the NAIA YouTube channel. The first round of the national tournament will start on Thursday, Nov. 20.
