Berger's 2nd Half Goal Lifts Broncos to Win at Southwestern

(Winfield, KS) - The Hastings College men's soccer team traveled to play against Southwestern College on Wednesday. The Broncos scored their first win of the season with the final score being 3-2.
In the first half the Broncos scored one goal compared to Southwestern's two. The Hastings men took seven shots with freshman Johnny Pedroza and senior Juan Lopez-Arteaga as the leading shot takers.
In the first five minutes of the game, Pedroza scored the first goal for the Broncos moments after the goalie for Southwestern blocked the first attempt. Southwestern scored in the 21st and 26th minutes to take a 2-1 lead at the break.
In the second half, sophomore Tim Berger took five shot attempts out of the Broncos six attempts. Out of these attempts the Broncos scored two goals resulting in Southwestern's defeat.
Berger had the first assist in the second half resulting in Pedroza scoring again in the 51st minute to tie it up at two. Hastings kept their momentum as sophomore Wade McWhorter had another shot attempt that fell short by barely hitting the crossbar.
Hastings quickly made up for it in the 64th minute as Berger scored again on a corner kick from McWhorter to junior Mauro Figueroa, who headed it to Berger for the go-ahead goal, as they came back to win, 3-2.
Berger's five shot attempts led the way for the Broncos, while all three of Pedroza's shots were on goal. Figueroa added two shots on goal and junior goalkeeper Ethan Watkins ended the game with three saves to get the win.
Next the Broncos host a game against Kansas Wesleyan at Lloyd Wilson Field on Saturday, September 6th at 8pm.
