Men's Basketball Stuns (RV) Concordia After 22-0 Second Half Run in Win
(Seward, NE) – In an interstate conference battle at (RV) Concordia on Wednesday night, the Hastings Broncos trailed by one four minutes into the second half. From there, Hastings went on a 22-0 run over the next seven minutes to take the momentum and get the 75-57 win. Concordia came into the game averaging 83 points per game and the Broncos held them to a season-low in points.
(Seward, NE) – In an interstate conference battle at (RV) Concordia on Wednesday night, the Hastings Broncos trailed by one four minutes into the second half. From there, Hastings went on a 22-0 run over the next seven minutes to take the momentum and get the 75-57 win. Concordia came into the game averaging 83 points per game and the Broncos held them to a season-low 57 points.
Sophomore Maverick Binder got the Broncos going early, scoring their first five points to take a 5-4 lead. From there, Hastings would go on a 9-2 run, led by five points by sophomore Micah Hinrichs to go up 14-6 with 13:14 left in the first half. Following a Bulldog layup, senior DaRon Hall scored, then a steal by senior Myles Simon turned into another two for Hall, going up 10 at the 10:28 mark.
Leading 19-13, Hinrichs drilled his second three of the half, then after two Bulldog free throws, freshman Riley Bombeck hit from downtown to take a 25-15 lead with under five minutes left in the first. Hinrichs made another three a minute later, but Concordia managed to get within five at the 1:30 mark and trailed 28-23 at the half.
Hastings shot 48 percent overall in the first half and 40 percent from three, holding Concordia to 29 percent from the field and 13 percent from the field. The Broncos also held a 20-15 edge on the glass. Hinrichs had 12 points and eight rebounds in the first half.
Concordia came out strong to begin the second half, going on a 11-5 run to take a 34-33 lead with 16:39 remaining. Hastings turned the game upside down with a 22-0 run, led by nine points on three triples from Hinrichs and eight points from Hall. Binder capped the run with a deep ball to take a 55-34 lead with 8:56 to go.
Leading 58-37, Concordia went on a 9-0 to get within 12 with 4:57 left. Binder penetrated and converted a three-point play on a short pullup and free throw after the foul to go up 15, but the Bulldogs inched closer, getting to within 11 at 61-50 with 3:37 left. Junior Ben Boudreau answered with a tough and-one finish, then hit a three with 1:37 left, as Hastings would get the 75-57 victory.
In the second half, Hastings shot 52 percent from the field and made 7-12 from three, as well as 16-18 from the line. Concordia shot 44 percent in the second half, but just 2-13 from three, and had eight turnovers. Overall, the Broncos shot 50 percent from the field and from three, while the Bulldogs were at 36 percent overall and 14 percent from deep. Hastings had a 32-30 advantage on the glass.
Hinrichs had a double-double of 21 points, making 6-7 threes, and 10 rebounds. Binder added 18 points and six rebounds, while Hall had 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Boudreau came off the bench and contributed eight points, six assists, and four rebounds.
