Men's Basketball Defeated by Red Raiders, 90-86

(Orange City, IA) – The men's basketball team held a 12-point lead at Northwestern on Saturday afternoon, but the Red Raiders stormed back in the second half to defeat the Broncos, 90-86.
A three from sophomore Maverick Binder and two more from junior Ben Boudreau put Hastings up 5-0 early. With Northwestern leading 6-5, sophomore Micah Hinrichs drilled back-to-back triples. Senior DaRon Hall hit a three of his own shortly after to go up 14-8 with 15:11 left in the first half. Leading by nine following a Binder layup, Northwestern got within four halfway through the first at 24-20.
Boudreau, Binder, and Hall all hit threes on consecutive possessions to go up 33-22 with 8:40 left in the half. A 6-0 personal run later in the half by Boudreau kept the Broncos up 11 at 39-28. Northwestern got the deficit back to eight with 1:34 left before halftime, but Boudreau and Hall pushed the lead to 49-37 at the half.
Hinrichs put Hastings up 13 in the early stages of the third quarter, then an 8-0 Red Raider run cut the lead to five. Leading 54-47, Northwestern went on an 11-0 run to take a 58-54 lead with 14:45 to go. Senior Myles Simon stopped the run with a bucket inside and scored twice more following a Red Raider basket to tie it at 60. Hall put them back in front at the line and after a couple baskets on the interior, Hastings went up six shortly after on free throws by Boudreau with 9:22 left.
A Northwestern three got them within three and they would tie the game at 71 with 4:56 left. The Red Raiders retook the lead less than a minute later on a three and would not give it up. Hastings trailed by three with 30 seconds left and were forced to foul the Red Raiders, who made their final six free throws down the stretch, including two with six seconds left with Hastings down two, to preserve the 90-86 win.
Northwestern shot 53 percent from the field and made 17-31 from three. Hastings shot 48 percent from the field and made 13-29 from three, but in the second half they were held to 38 percent overall and 18 percent from three. The Red Raiders also had a 33-30 advantage on the glass.
Boudreau led the team with 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Hall added 22 points and three rebounds, while Binder had 14 points and five rebounds. Hinrichs chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. Simon came off the bench to score nine points, along with four rebounds.
