Dordt's Strong Second Half Too Much for Broncos

Dordt took an early 10-2 lead to prompt a Hastings timeout. The Broncos responded well with threes on back-to-back possessions by sophomores Micah Hinrichs and Maverick Binder. Senior DaRon Hall tied it up at 10 with a pull-up jumper and Binder later drove and kicked it out to junior Ben Boudreau who was spotting up for a wide-open three, going up 13-10 at the 15:05 mark.
Hall and Binder capitalized on a pair of errant passes, turning them into fast-break layups to lead 20-15. Ahead by five at the midway point of the half, Hinrichs' hook shot dropped to go up 26-19. Boudreau went coast-to-coast after a rebound for a layup to take an eight-point lead at the 6:09 mark. Dordt later got back within one at the line with 3:27 left, and after two free throws by Hall, the Defenders tied it at 37 with a three-pointer. After Dordt scored at the rim twice in the final minutes of the half, Hall scored right before half to make it a 44-42 halftime Dordt lead.
Dordt shot 62 percent from the field to Hastings' 50 percent in the opening half. The Broncos knocked down 6-11 from three and forced nine turnovers. Hall and Hinrichs each had 10 points to lead the Broncos at the break.
The Defenders opened up a seven-point lead in the second half before Boudreau got the Broncos on the board, as Dordt went up 54-44 with a 10-2 run to start the half. Down 60-46, Hastings went on an 11-2 run, with Hall scoring six points in the run and Hinrichs scoring the other five. Dordt knocked down a three, then with 10:05 remaining, Binder sank a pair of free throws to make it 65-59.
Dordt went back up double-digits and held a 72-60 lead with 7:29 left. Junior Owen Wright cut it to eight with a dunk at the 5:45 mark. Then with 2:50 left, Hastings got as close as six with free throws from Hinrichs. After a Dordt jumper and four missed threes by Hastings to try to trim the deficit, the Defenders closed it out, 84-72.
For the game, Dordt shot 59 percent from the field and held Hastings to 43 percent. Dordt held Hastings to 1-14 from three in the second half and a 36-21 advantage on the boards for the game. The Broncos forced 17 turnovers, leading to 19 points.
Hall led the team with 21 points, five assists, five steals, and three rebounds. Hinrichs had 19 points and Boudreau finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
Up next, Hastings will play an exhibition game at Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 4pm before resuming conference action at Midland on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7:45pm.
