(Hastings, NE) – In a game between two teams one game out of eighth place in the GPAC standings entering the final week of the regular season, sophomore Micah Hinrichs came up clutch. With the game tied at 58, senior DaRon Hall collapsed the defense and passed it out to Hinrichs for a buzzer-beating three that went in, came out, and dropped in again to knock off the Tigers, 61-58.
Early on in the game, Hinrichs answered a Doane three-pointer with a deep ball of his own, but after sophomore Maverick Binder hit a three to go up 6-4, the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to go up 12-6. The Broncos got closer on a couple baskets by Hall, who then tied it at 14 on a jumper. Trailing 14-12, Binder hit two threes to give Hastings the lead back at 20-16.
Doane pulled ahead to take a 25-22 lead at the 7:50 mark and it was Hall again that ended the run with a pull-up jumper. With Doane still up by a point, the Tigers hit a three to go up four with 3:16 to go. Hinrichs finished strong inside against the zone defense and junior Ben Boudreau got a steal and layup at the other end to tie it at 32. Binder knocked down a midrange jumper near the halftime buzzer to give Hastings a 34-32 lead.
Boudreau and Binder made two early threes in the second half and after Doane got within one at 40-39, Hastings went on a 10-0 run, keyed by a couple of three-pointers by Hinrichs and ending with a Hall basket to go up 50-39 with 14:44 left. Doane managed to cut into the lead, making it 52-48 with 9:52 to go.
Hall scored the next three points for Hastings and Boudreau hit a jumper near the expiration of the shot clock to put them up seven. Two Doane free throws and a triple brought them within two at the 5:46 mark. With Hastings leading by three with less than two minutes left, Doane tied it with a three.
Hastings had a couple of chances to re-take the lead on their next two possessions on a floater by Hall and a three by Hinrichs, but Doane forced misses called timeout with 47 seconds left and possession. Senior Myles Simon stole the ball on a quick double-team in the post giving Hastings one final chance in regulation. Hall penetrated into lane and kicked out to Hinrichs, who rattled home the three as the horn sounded.
Hastings shot 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from three, while Doane was 43 percent from the field and 32 percent from three. Both teams had 33 rebounds, but Hastings was able to force three more turnovers, outscoring the Tigers 15-12 in points off turnovers.
Hall finished with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Hinrichs had 16 points and five rebounds, while Binder had 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Boudreau chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.
Up next, Hastings will host Concordia for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3:45pm. The Broncos are currently tied for eighth with Midland, who went 1-1 against each other, in the GPAC standings. Midland defeated current top-seeded Morningside earlier in the season so the Broncos will need to have Midland lose to Doane to reach the conference tournament.
