Flames Defeat Broncos in 4 Sets

(Hastings, NE) – After winning their conference opener on Wednesday night over Doane, the Hastings Broncos fell in four sets to the College of Saint Mary Flames (26-24, 23-25, 21-25, 25-27).
After Hastings opened with a 3-0 lead, the Flames went on a 13-5 run to go up 13-8. Hastings racked up four straight points to get within one on an ace by senior Alexis Pontine. College of Saint Mary later pulled ahead 23-16, but Hastings climbed their way back.
After a service error and two attacks by the Flames, sophomore Londyn Carnes contributed on two blocks to get within two at 23-21. Back-to-back aces by freshman Klarissa Dowdy tied it at 23 and another block by Carnes put Hastings up 24-23. The Flames saved set point on a Hastings error to tie it again at 24, but Carnes and sophomore Kaleah Olson recorded kills on the next two points to win the opening set, 26-24.
Hastings led 6-5 early in the second set, then College of Saint Mary won the next five points to go up 10-6. The Broncos fought back to within one at 13-12, then after the Flames extended the lead back out to three at 20-17, Hastings won five straight points with kills from sophomore Makenna Sutter, junior Ilse Benne, and Dowdy to go up 22-20. College of Saint Mary fought back by winning five of the next six points to close out the set, 25-23.
Set three began with Hastings getting a 5-1 lead, which the Flames quickly came back to take an 8-5 lead. A 9-3 run put the Broncos up 14-11, which included two kills from Sutter. Hastings took a 20-17 lead after three consecutive kills by Benne, Olson, and Sutter, but the Flames turned it on late in the set again, winning eight of the next nine points to capture the set, 25-21.
In set four, College of Saint Mary started strong with a 14-7 lead. Sutter got three kills on the next three points, then Hastings scored two more to get within two at 14-12. The Flames stayed ahead, but the Broncos kept fighting, getting to within one late at 19-18 on a Benne kill. Trailing 24-22, freshman Fran Warson assisted Benne and junior Camryn Ringsdorf for back-to-back kills, tying the set at 24-all, Hastings later saved another set point, but the Flames pulled out the win, 27-25, ending on a Bronco attacking error.
Sutter and Benne led Hastings with 16 kills each. Warson led the match with 24 assists, along with 19 assists from Pontine. Benson led Hastings in digs with 27.
