Briar Cliff Holds off Broncos, 3-1

(Hastings, NE) – The women's volleyball teams fell in four sets to the Briar Cliff Chargers on Saturday during Homecoming weekend (20-25, 25-21,19-25, 23-25).
The teams' split the first 18 points, then Briar Cliff won seven of the next eight points to go up 16-10. Hastings fought back to trail by two at 18-16 on the serve of freshman Fran Warson. The Chargers later took the opening set, 25-20.
Hastings jumped out to a 9-5 lead early in the second set. Leading 12-10, Briar Cliff won six of seven points to take a 16-13 lead. The Broncos answered back with five points out of the next six, including two kills by sophomore Makenna Sutter to go up 18-17. Briar Cliff briefly pulled back ahead, 19-18, but two kills each from Sutter and junior Ilse Benne led to a 25-21 set two win for Hastings.
Briar Cliff pulled ahead 8-3 to begin the third and after Hastings answered back to take a 13-11 lead that included two kills from Benne, Briar Cliff tied it up at 14. Hastings won the next point on a service error, but the next four points went to the Chargers to go up 18-15. With Briar Cliff leading 21-19, they won four straight points to close the set out, 25-19.
Hastings held a 10-6 lead in the fourth set as they looked to force a decisive fifth set, but the Chargers came back. They rallied to go up 12-10 and the two teams kept the set close the rest of the way. Tied at 23-all, the Chargers won the last two points on a kill and a block to win it, 25-23.
Sutter and Benne had 12 kills each to lead the Broncos. Sophomore Lainey Benson had 29 digs and Sutter had 23 digs. Warson led Hastings with 19 assists and senior Alexis Pontine had 16 assists.
Up next, Hastings will play at Northwestern on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7:30pm.
