Mount Marty Holds Off Broncos in 4 Sets

Mount Marty started fast with a 5-1 early advantage. Hastings later came back to trail by three at 12-9 on a kill by junior Ilse Benne, but the Lancers pulled back ahead by six, 21-15. The Broncos went on a 7-1 run to even it up at 22, led by two kills each from Benne and sophomore Makenna Sutter. Three of the next four points would go the way of the Lancers, as they took the opening set, 25-23.
The second set belonged to the Lancers. Leading 6-5 in the second, the Lancers strung seven points together to go up 13-5. After a couple of Bronco points, Mount Marty won six of seven. Later at 19-10, the Lancers won four straight and six of the next nine to win the set, 25-13.
With Mount Marty leading 7-3 in the third set, Hastings got some momentum by going on a 4-1 run with three kills from Sutter. The Broncos got it to within one at 13-12 on a Benne kill, which concluded her run of four kills in the last five points on that play. The Lancers won the next four points, followed by four points from the Broncos to make it 17-16.
Mount Marty held a 22-17 lead in the fourth set, but Hastings won the next point and three points off of freshman Fran Warson's serve, getting to within one at 22-21. At 24-21, Sutter and freshman Klarissa Dowdy got consecutive kills, then after a Mount Marty timeout, Sutter got an ace and Hastings took the fourth set, 26-24, on a couple of Lancer attacking errors.
Tied at five in the fourth, Mount Marty stole the momentum and took a 9-5 lead. They continued to hold a steady lead throughout the set until consecutive kills by junior Camryn Ringsdorf and sophomore Kaleah Olson got to within one at 16-15. That would be as close as Hastings would get in the set, as Mount Marty pulled away and took the set, 25-19.
Benne led the team with 15 kills and Sutter also had 14 kills. Warson finished with 23 assists and senior Alexis Pontine had 17 assists. Sophomore Lainey Benson had a team-high 18 digs. Sutter and sophomore Hailey Whitmarsh each had 14 digs and Warson chipped in with 11.
