#2 Bulldogs Take Down Broncos, 3-0
(Seward, NE) – In a road battle versus #2-ranked Concordia, the Hastings women’s volleyball team fought hard, but fell 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 15-25) on Wednesday night.

Hastings came out strong in the first set, taking six of the first seven points, led by a couple of kills and a block by sophomore Makenna Sutter to go up 6-1. Aces by junior Madison Navarrete and sophomore Hailey Whitmarsh kept the Broncos ahead, 12-8, but Concordia grabbed control of the first set by winning the next five points.
With Concordia leading 14-13 in the opening set, the Bulldogs later pulled ahead 20-16. A kill from junior Ilse Benne sparked a 3-0 run to trim the deficit to one, but Concordia won the last five points of the set to take it, 25-19.
The second set began with Concordia going up 6-2. Kills by Sutter and Benne brought the Broncos back to within three at 10-7 before the Bulldogs expanded the lead again to 17-12. Hastings got it back to a one-point deficit at 18-17 on a kill by Benne from senior Alexis Pontine, but the Bulldogs closed the set strong, winning 25-19.
Hastings opened the third set with momentum, taking a 5-3 lead with four kills and an ace. The Bulldogs flipped the tables after that, winning eight straight and 14 of the next 16 points to go up 17-7. Kills by sophomore Kaleah Olson and Benne inched the Broncos closer, getting to 18-12 at one point. Concordia eventually closed out the match with a 25-15 set three victory.
Benne, Olson, and Sutter each had a team-high six kills. Pontine led the team with 22 assists, while Sutter had 13 digs and sophomore Lainey Benson had 11 digs. Olson had three blocks along with Sutter and junior Amiya Barnes also contributing two blocks.
Up next, Hastings will take on Briar Cliff at home on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4:30pm as part of Homecoming weekend.
