Lancers Defeat Broncos in Straight Sets

With Mount Marty holding a 5-4 lead, the Lancers started to pull away in the first set. They took six of the next seven points to take a 11-5 lead. Kills by sophomore Makenna Sutter and junior Ilse Benne helped keep Hastings in the set at 15-10, but Mount Marty later pulled ahead, 20-12. Hastings got as close as four at 24-20, but the Lancers won the set a point later, 25-20.
In set two, the Lancers took a 9-5 lead, but Hastings answered back with three straight points, including two kills from Benne to make it 9-8. Mount Marty would maintain the lead however, pushing the lead back to three a 15-12. The Broncos got within one more time at 15-14 on a Mount Marty attacking error, but at 17-5, the Lancers went on a 5-0 run to go up 22-15. After Hastings won the next three points, Mount Marty regrouped and took the second set, 25-20.
Set three was controlled by Mount Marty, as after they lost the first point, they won five straight points to take a 5-1 lead. A kill from Benne and an error from the Lancers cut the lead to two at 5-3, but they quickly took the momentum back, not losing consecutive points to build a 20-9 lead. Hastings was able to trade points the rest of the way, but Mount Marty won the third set, 25-14.
Sutter led the team with eight kills, along with seven kills from Benne. Freshman Fran Warson had 15 assists and senior Alexis Pontine had 12 assists, while sophomore Lainey Benson had a team-high 13 digs.
Up next, Hastings will host Midland on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4:30pm.
