Volleyball Knocks Off Doane in 4 Sets on Senior Day
(Hastings, NE) – The women’s volleyball team toughed out a four-set win over Doane on Senior Day, winning 28-26, 25-18, 21-25, 29-27.
(Hastings, NE) – The women's volleyball team toughed out a four-set win over Doane on Senior Day, winning 28-26, 25-18, 21-25, 29-27.
Doane went up 8-5 early in the first, to which Hastings responded with six straight points, four coming on kills, all by different Broncos. Hastings later went up 17-12 on a kill by sophomore Makenna Sutter. Doane later tied it up at 23-all and the two teams would keep the score within a point until it reached 26-all. Junior Ilse Benne got a kill and a Tiger attacking error gave Hastings a 28-26 set one win.
Sutter put Hastings up 8-5 early in the second with an ace and they later stretched the lead out to five at 15-10 on a Doane attacking error. Leading 20-13, Doane rallied to get it within four at 22-18. Hastings won the next three points with one Doane error and back-to-back kills by Sutter and freshman Klarissa Dowdy to take the second set, 25-18.
Hastings had the momentum to begin the third set, going up 10-5 on a Sutter kill. Doane fought their way back to take a 15-13 lead with a 10-3 run. Hastings won four straight after that, but Doane took the third set by winning 10 of the next 14 points to win it, 25-21.
Doane won the first six points of the fourth set, but Hastings was able to weather the storm. They quickly turned that deficit into a 9-8 lead that included three straight blocks by sophomore Kaleah Olson and two kills from Sutter. With Doane retaking the lead at 10-9, Hastings came back to go up 16-12 on a Benne kill.
The Tigers took a brief 19-18 lead, but the Broncos quickly went back up 24-21. Doane staved off three match points, tying it at 24. Hastings later trailed 27-26, but they regrouped, beginning with Barnes getting a block, and back-to-back Tiger attacking errors, to give Hastings the 29-27 win.
Benne had a game-high 15 kills and Sutter and Dowdy each had double-digit kills at 11 and 10, respectively. Sophomore Lainey Benson had 29 digs and Sutter added 20. Freshman Fran Warson had 24 assists and senior Alexis Pontine had 19 assists. Olson and junior Amiyah Barnes contributed three blocks each, with all six of them coming in the fourth set.
Up next, Hastings will host Mount Marty in their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7:30pm.
