Volleyball Loses Tight 5-Set Match at Waldorf

The first set was very competitive, with Hastings rallying from a 6-5 deficit to go ahead 10-7 on a kill from freshman Klarissa Dowdy. Hastings built their lead up to four at 15-11 and had a 16-13 lead, but Waldorf fought back to tie it at 16. The Warriors later took the lead and went up 23-18. A kill and a block by sophomore Mikah O'Neill followed by a kill by sophomore Kaleah Olson trimmed the deficit to two at 23-21. Waldorf managed to close out the set at 25-23 with a kill on set point.
Waldorf took a 10-6 lead in the second set, then Hastings began to make a run, eventually tying it up at 14 by winning four straight points, ending on a block by Dowdy and sophomore Makenna Sutter. The Warriors went back up three at 22-19, but Hastings closed the set on a 6-0 run. O'Neill started it off with a pair of kills, then a double block by O'Neill and junior Ilse Benne tied it at 23. Following a Waldorf error, O'Neill and Olson teamed up for a block and the Broncos wrapped the set up 25-22 on a Waldorf attacking error.
Hastings led 8-6 early in the third set, which included three blocks and a kill from Dowdy. Waldorf came back and held a 16-12 lead. Hastings then responded by winning nine of the next 12 points to take a 21-19 lead with Benne and Sutter getting a pair of kills. Waldorf tied up the set at 22, then Benne got a kill and senior Alexis Pontine delivered an ace. Waldorf saved one set point, but Benne ended the set at 25-23 with a kill set up by Pontine.
The Broncos started the fourth set strong, building an early lead at 11-7 with three kills from Dowdy. With Hastings leading 15-12, Waldorf won five straight to go up 17-15. Hastings came back with four straight points of their own to re-take the lead at 19-17. Tied at 23 later in the set, Waldorf got back-to-back kills to take the fourth set, 25-23.
Similar to the fourth set, Hastings started the fifth set strong by winning seven of the first 10 points. Waldorf came back and took a one point lead at 8-7. With Waldorf leading 12-11, the Warriors capitalized on a Bronco attacking error and got a block on the next point to go up 14-11. Hastings staved off one set point, but Waldorf ended the match on a kill to win the fifth set, 15-12.
O'Neill led the Broncos with 14 kills, as well as 11 from Dowdy and 10 from Benne. Sophomore Lainey Benson had a team-high 26 digs and sophomore Hailey Whitmarsh reached double-figures with 10 digs. Pontine finished with 28 assists, while freshman Fran Warson had 16 assists. In blocks, Dowdy also had seven, two of which were solo, and O'Neill had four.
